Best Boy Recommends: Day 1

As the sun sets on the opening night, we now look forward to today, the first full day of screenings in the amazing line up at this year’s festival. Our top choices for tomorrow? Well thank God you asked!

Kicking the day off at 12pm is A Celebration of David Hammond, with a double bill of Dusty Bluebells and Something to Write Home About. A true pioneer of not just documentaries within Ireland, but art in Ireland as a whole, from music to broadcast. With Docs Ireland’s main focus, of course, being on Irish documentary, it feels deeply special to have this celebration happen in this year’s programme.

A true highlight of the programme as a whole for us here at Best Boy is screening tomorrow at 6pm; Union, a film that follows the historic and groundbreaking moment a group of ordinary workers from Staten Island won their case to become the first unionised Amazon workplace in America, something that was believed to be impossible. The film isn’t just a snippet of this moment in time, but instead follows the workers from day one of the campaign, through to their monumental victory against the big man.

The most important section of the entire festival for us this year is the Focus on Palestine, with several astounding films screening and the proceeds going to Medical Aid for Palestinians, the focus allows us to not just donate to an essential cause, but gives us the chance to see unbelievable and important films. Today Three Promises and Between Two Crossings will screen as a double bill at 7pm. Three Promises will screen with a pre-recorded introduction from the filmmaker, Yousef Srouji, and will be the Irish premiere of the film. Between Two Crossings will feature a pre-recorded introduction from the widow of one of the filmmakers, who is still living in Gaza.

If none of these amazing films hand selected by the buffoons here running Best Boy tickle your fancy, not to worry, there’s plenty more happening all around Belfast! Sure to be a great day all round, get your tickets and don’t miss out!

We’ll see yas tomorrow for our next daily round up!

⁃ love from, Best Boy
